⊗Alice's Restaurant
/Skyline Blvd. and La Honda Rd., Woodside

/
/Local yokels. Substantial standard breakfasts. Sunday is good day
to eat outside and watch the bikers [JVC-82].
≡
⊗Calvin's Philadelphia Eatery
/234 Castro Street, Mountain View
/415 964-8470
/11am-7pm Mon-Sat, closed Sun. No credit cards.
/Everything is homemade: BBQ Ribs, Chicken, hoagies,
steak and deli sandwiches. I have tasted the ribs and they are excellent.
They also make a sweetpotato cheesecake which I highly recommend. The owners
are from south Philly. The place is small and the atmosphere is very friendly
[HLL-5/83].

⊗The Cellar
/4926 El Camino Real, Los Altos
/415 964-0220
/11:30am-2:30pm 6pm-10pm Mon-Fri, 6pm-10pm Sat, 5pm-10pm Sun.
/Reasonable food. Somewhat on expensive side. Often has discount coupons
in Palo Alto Weekly [ARK-84].
≡
⊗Clarke's Charcoal Broiler
/615 El Camino Real, Mountain View
/415 967-0851
/11am-9pm. No cards.
/Kirk's is better, especially where cleanliness is concerned [PAT-80].
≡
⊗Day and Night Barbecue
/2118 University Avenue, East Palo Alto
/415 324-0281
/closes around 10:30pm. No cards.
/This is a barbecue joint, plain and simple. No seating, you
just order your food and take it out. Ribs ($7.50/lb, your
choice of hot or mild sauce) are the main attraction, but
they also have chicken, polish sausage, sweet potato pie,
etc. The ribs are yummy [MOG-82].
≡
⊗Dinah's Shack
/4269 El Camino Real, Palo Alto
/415 493-9510

/11:30am-2:30pm 5:30pm-10pm, Fri-Sat till 10:30pm, Sun brunch: 10am-2:30pm.
VS, MC.
/For the credit card set -- slick setting, OK food, high prices [LES-82].
The bar stays open until 1:00 on weekends and often has live music; go
there for drinks after a movie [SM-2/83].
≡
⊗The Great Hot Dog Experience
/204 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto
/415 326-1023
/
/I could go into a long description about how terrible it was, how the food
was like toxic waste, the service totally incompetent, etc. However,
like me just say: as a previous detractor of McDonalds, I had the
spontaneous thought while at this cursed place of how %2wonderful%*
McDonalds is in comparison! To quote Eric Berglund (another victim),
"I have no standards whatsoever when it comes to hot dogs, and I thought
their hot dogs were pretty terrible."
So, discover your junk food standards there or do yourself a favor and
avoid the place. In any case, be forewarned [DC-8/84].

/2275 El Camino Real, Palo Alto
/415 326-6522
/11:30am-3:30pm 5:30pm-10:00. VS, MC.

Strange combinations of foods that don't succeed [ARK-83].

⊗*Kirk's
/361 California, Palo Alto

/11am-10pm. No cards.
/Charcoal-grilled hamburgers -- a delicious alternative to the

A definite win. The burgers are BIG! Well worth the price [DON-79:80,
ARK-6/84].

/The best place for breakfast on the Peninsula. The Flea Street Cafe is
under the same management [TRG-82].
Bland [NCR-82].
Good food, but very long wait during lunch time [ARK-83].

/Stanford Shopping Center
/415 327-4735
/10am-10pm Mon-Thu & Sat, 10am-11pm Fri, 9am-5pm Sun. AX, MC, VS.
/Same as the SF Mama's, the style here is sit-down and more expensive than
the buffet style at the Hillsdale Mama's. This Mama's seems to cater to
the Atherton types [PAT-80].
Same delicious quality as the other Mama'ses [LES-80:82].
≡
⊗Monterey Whaling Company
/190 E. El Camino, Mountain View
/415 969-4323
/11:30am-2pm Mon-Fri, 5pm-10pm Sun-Thu, 5pm-11:30pm Fri-Sat.
Reservations recommended on weekends. AX, MC, VS.
/Seafood and service good. Ask if they have the broiled swordfish. Entrees
range from $7 (beef kabob or sole) to $11 or $12 (abalone or lobster)
[DON-79:80].
Service was very slow on two recent visits. Without a reservation on a
Saturday night, had to wait nearly an hour in the bar for a table. Then
got stuck in a real out-of-the-way corner of the restaurant, and largely
ignored thereafter [RLW-82].
≡
⊗The New Leaf
/1801 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto
/415 493-7600
/11am-2pm Mon-Fri.
/An execellent place for lunch although somewhat crowded. Prices slightly
higher than in the Coffee House, but the food is much better. They also do
catering [TRG-82].
High priced but excellent sandwiches. Go on a warm day and eat outside
by the fish pond [LES-81:82].
There are no fish in the "fish pond," which is so totally devoid of
any form of life that it has clearly been treated with something; I
find this rather depressing. The food is okay, however [KK-12/84].
≡
⊗Ramona's
/541 Ramona Street, Palo Alto
/415 326-2220
/11am-11pm. No cards.
/Bass ale on tap! [SJF-80].
Good crust, toppings a little sparse [WDG-81].
The pizza is OK although not everyone likes the large dose of ketchup.
Other items (in particuliar, soup) don't get the same attention [TRG-82].
Always inexplicably crowded. The best I can say is that the pizza is better
than Round Table's, but then so is cardboard [PJA-9/84].
≡
⊗Stagecoach
/3062 Woodside Road, Woodside
/415 851-8010
/Mon-Sun 11am-2:30pm, 5pm-8pm
/Reasonable food at reasonable prices [ARK-84].

⊗Sundance Mine Company
/1921 El Camino Real, Palo Alto
/415 321-6798
/11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30pm-10:30pm. AX, VS, MC.
/Good. Try the Calamari [WDG-81].
For the type (prime rib and seafood), it's quite good [JQJ-82].
The twilight special is a great deal. Includes soup or salad, baked
potato and some vegetable for $6.95 for a selected list of entrees.
Available before 6:30pm seven days a week. Good food, too. Otherwise,
it can be expensive, since everything is otherwise a la carte [ARK-6/84].
≡
⊗The New Varsity
/456 University Avenue, Palo Alto
/323-6411 or 321-1246
/11:30am-2pm 5:30pm-10pm daily, Sun brunch 11am-2pm.
/The table service may be the worst in any Palo Alto restaurant, but I like
the ambiance. The entertainment seems to be shifting a bit away from
movies and towards live performances [JQJ-82].
Be warned: whenever I have eaten there (dinner, brunch), my stomach complained
about food poisoning. Even with X $ off on the movie price, it's a lousy deal.
However, a good place to go for coffee or dessert [TRG-82].
≡
⊗Village Pub
/2967 Woodside Road, Woodside
/415 851-1294
/11am-midnight Tue-Sun, closed Mon.
/Expensive ($15 pp.) but mostly worth it. Large menu, carefully
prepared. Warning: jackets required for men [NCR-81].
Overpriced and pretentious. Don't waste your money [DEW-9/83].
≡
⊗Woodside Little Store (alias BeefBurger)
/3340 Woodside Road, Woodside
/415 851-7370
/11am-3pm, 5:30pm-9pm. Cash only.
/What a find! This place is great for a quick, cheap, and tasty meal out
in Woodside. The locals have dinner here; one night Joan Baez was sitting
at the table next to mine. They have various hamburger platters, sausages,
and one dinner special (such as stew) each evening. You order at the
bar and they bring it to your table. One of the owners is a frenchman
who makes his own French Onion Soup (authentic!!) and fresh pastries daily.
You can have a full dinner here for $5 or so, and it is really a pleasant
place - great for an "after the beach" dinner [ALL-82].

/10am-3pm Mon-Wed, 10am-9pm Thu-Fri.
/I've had lunch there three
times and have been pleased with the quality and quantity, though it is
moderately expensive. The pate served with apples and walnuts is $5 and
the smoked salmon quiche is around $6; both are excellent. Wine can be
purchased by the glass (usually 6 to 8 selections) or by the bottle
(over 100 selections). They have a full expresso bar, a nice selection
of teas, fresh squeezed orange juice, champagne, over a dozen beers
(including Henry Weinhards on tap), and more. Their dessert menu begins
with Chocolate Decadence, but I've never had room for dessert [MZA-5/83].

/321 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto

/10am-9pm weekdays, 10am-6pm Sat, 11am-6pm Sun. MC, VS.
/Newly opened clone of the San Francisco chain offering a variety
of interesting but expensive salads, desserts and coffee. Eat there or
buy things by the pound and take them home. Try the baba ghanoush
(Middle-eastern eggplant salad) when available [SM-3/83].

/Good sandwiches, made to order [LES-76:82].
Good expresso drinks. Crowded at night as always [TVR-76:80].
The sandwiches are overpriced, the coffees are excellent for this campus
[TRG-82].

/3607 Alameda de las Pulgas, Menlo Park
/415 854-1226
/11am-2:30pm Tue-Fri, 6pm-10pm Thu-Sat.
/A great place, but be prepared to wait. They don't have a large menu
(it is changed every fortnight), normally only 3 to 4 items. So far, I've
never been disappointed. Also, they offer a (always changing) selection of
open wines [TRG-82].
Good but quite expensive. The wait can be quite long. You can call
them up and get the next slot on the waiting list, but you had better
be there when they call your name or you lose [ARK-83].
My favorite place on the peninsula for creative gourmet food. Prices
fair for what you get, good wine list [DEW-12/84].

⊗Fresco, A California Cafe
/3398 El Camino, Palo Alto
/415 493-3470
/6am-11pm.
¬y
/Fresco is run by the folks who brought you the Skywood
Restaurant, and it's a far cry from the old Stickney's that used to
occupy the facility. Gone is all the pink-orange naugahyde, replaced by
white spaciousness and subdued tones of charcoal (it's only a matter of
time before they bring in the ferns and potted plants).
Appetizers include New Potato Skins with
Sour Cream and Caviar (the caviar is Golden Pearl and some other smaller
yellow caviar, but the skins were over-cooked into shoe leather).
Sandwiches include Smoked Duck, Turkey and Bacon Club
Salads include
Walnut, Gorgonzola and Sliced Apple (their honey mustard dressing is
yummy and lighter and thinner than other honey mustards I've had).
Their menu includes 4 fettuccine dishes, 8 regular mesquite broiled entrees
and several daily selections of fresh fish. The jalapeno fettuccine with
tomato, sour cream and avocado was delicious and rich.
Desserts include
Bud's ice cream, chocolate pecan pie, chocolate strada (I was too full
to try it), and other daily specials.
They have a nice selection of wines and a full bar.
$8-15 pp. [MZA-1/84].

/A delightful little shop off the beaten path of the Stanford Shopping

of the day posted on a chalk board at the entrance. Various coffees,
expressos, and capuccinos are offered, along with an %2excellent%* selection

Excellent food. The usually long waits can be avoided if you arrive early.

/I could write a book about Louie and his great
restaurants, his friendliness to me, his wife, and
children, and above all his food. But I won't.
Suffice it to say that there is no Szechuan
restaurant in the universe that compares with
this. The following dishes are musts: potstickers,
dry braised prawns, bon-bon chicken, kung pao beef,
kung pao prawns, dry braised fish, dry cooked string
beans, braised beef wonton soup, hot and sour soup.
Avoid the non-Szechuan dishes. He merely puts them
on the menu to make money he once said since the
Szechuan dishes don't make money. Take a friend.
Outrageous prices but for the best I accept his
prices. When Louie closes for good, I'll mourn [SMC-82:9/84].
Still the world's best potstickers. But don't order anything special without
finding out the price in advance [BH-82].
Everytime I go there with Ralph Gorin or John McCarthy, I get flamed
out from the food. I've never had a spicier Spicy Beef Wonton Soup.
When it's good, it is very, very good; when it's bad, it's hotter than
hell or too greasy [ARK-83].
The quality has declined significantly. I have gone back several times
now since the move to University Ave. and have always been
dissappointed. Sometimes the food has been downright inedible (e.g.,
very fatty, smelled like garbage, etc.). The service, which was never
fast, has grown intolerable. The little kid busboy who was alternately
cute and obnoxious is long gone [JJ-12/84].

Authentic Cantonese is a treat that is not easy to find.

and sporting a goodly amount of black beans. The Dragon and Phoenix bean

/Amazing! A quality restaurant in Mountain View! Food is quite good,
though perhaps not the equal of some of the best (e.g. Maddalena's),
and reasonably priced for the quality. But the nicest part is the
atmosphere; you can go casually (though not grubbily) dressed and not
feel out of place, or you can go formally and feel just as
comfortable. Augusto and his brother, who take care of most of the
service, are quite willing to chat if you want to and things aren't
too rushed, and both are pleasant conversationalists. The place used
to be a piano bar, and Augusto still plays a fine rag-time piano when
he has the time. What with the piano, and the people, and the fine
food, you can easily spend an entire evening there [DON-78:80].
Very pleasant. Matches are engraved with your reservation name and women

delicious; each cherry is stuffed with an almond [SM-80].
Everything Don said in '78 is still true. This is a simply wonderful
place. The food is consistently excellent, service is personal and
friendly. Try the Lobster Scampi or the Baby Scallops (when available).
The Grand Marnier Souffle is a superb dessert, and the Nero's Coffee
afterwards is a visual and taste delight. Plan on spending the evening; a
table reserved at Augusto's is yours for the night. Wine list is good,

There's a rotating menu (with more than one selection per day, unlike

/A great place for lunch. Try to get a table outdoors. The "wine list" is
a large wine rack; you just look at the bottles themselves, then order by
bin number. Good selection of wines and crepes [RLW-82].
Prices for wine are high and the food is boring, but the atmosphere is
pleasant if you want to sit outdoors or to select your wine by looking at
the bottles instead of at a wine list. Otherwise, I don't recommend it

Their food does not live up to the nice outside setting. It is fast food

/Beto has moved from his old location north a mile or so. His old place,
Casablanca, no longer exists. The new place is much nicer -- not a hole in the
wall any more. Beto has gone commercial, with his likeness on the menu, the
beer mugs and the wine glasses. The interior of the restaurant isn't bad for
Contemporary Mexican-American Tacky. It's much larger than Casablanca was,
the kitchen is much bigger (and cleaner), and there's even a hostess to seat you.
The food hasn't suffered at all from the move -- in fact, it may even be
better, due to the brand-spanking-new kitchen. Beto's hot sauce is the best
around; terrifically hot but delicious. The menu, which offers standard Mexican
fare, has grown both in size and in price. Most dinner combinations are now in
the $5.50 to $5.95 range, but the amount of food you get is worth it. Try a 1/2
order of nachos as an appetizer for two people. Beto will come over to your table
and tell you how his nachos are featured in his new radio commercial. (!)
This is my favorite local Mexican restaurant. You can eat as much or as
little as you like, building your own combinations of enchiladas, burritos,
rellenos, tostadas, etc., etc. The beer mugs are well chilled, the service is
efficient but unhurried, and the background music is unobtrusive. Beto's wife
Alicia is now running a very pleasant little boutique in the front. She's as
friendly and chatty as Beto, and will tell you all about the origins of her
imported items.
All in all, a very pleasant place. Highly recommended [RLW-81].

/Corporate-concept yuppy Mexican food, but a cut above Casa Maria

As I mentioned in another Mexican restaurant review, some

Remodelling completed in late '83. Now more like a real business

store to get beer. Decoration is understated and tasteful, not the tacky
decor often found in Mexican restaraunts. Food is slightly more
expensive, but still good. Try the chicken mole for something

sweet; sometimes too spicy) [JJ-12/84].

Arrogant staff, ridiculous wine prices ($5.00 corkage fee too!). Go to

The belly dancer is what I remember most . . . Yum!!! [MRC-80].
A really sensual experence. Great spicy lentil soup and pastilla (a chicken

To be really truly authentic, don't let them serve the women in your party
until after the men have finished, and feed them in the back room [LES-80].
Good Moroccan food, although the dessert was unimpressive. Overpriced
The sugar-chicken was delicious. Belly-dancers were good [SMC-82].
Food is quite tasty, especially the sugar coated chicken pie. No silverware,
but the napkins are towels. One price menu about $16pp without wine. The
atmosphere is appropriate, including belly dancer. If you get there just
before 7:30pm you can sometimes get two showings! Make sure you have some
dollar bills to tip the belly dancer. It is interesting to watch the men
who have come with their wives tipping the belly dancer! The mint tea
is served by pouring from three feet off the table [ARK-80:84].
Loser. Arrogant staff, untalented belly dancer (they pay so poorly
that no decent dancer would work there), no non-smoking area, absurd
prices. If you want Moroccan food go to SF or Menara in San Jose [MRC-11/85].

/This joint is "a slice of SF," i.e. you will encounter the most bizzare
potpouri of SF denizens ever gathered under one roof.
The only place I've ever seen polyester disco, razor blade punk, hardcore
bikers, lads in leather, long hair veggie cosmic karma types, and dressed for
the opera crowd sharing the same establishment.
A demented disc
jock floods about half the floor space with alternate cuts of disco and
punk. The waiters are ready for Halloween year round. One I recall
clearly had a bright orange Mike Nomad haircut, a T shirt proclaiming his
feelings about leather, and a Marine Corps style tattoo announcing carnal
knowledge of his mother. He did bring our drinks and food tho....
I frequented this joint during the three weeks of Grateful Dead concerts
in the Warfield nearby, and highly recommend their burgers of all styles
and their home-fried potatoes. Their beer is cheap and plentiful, and the
half of the floor space farthest from the music is pleasant.
It was always fairly full, but wait was less than 10 minutes.
So next time you're stuck with an aunt from Kansas City out for a visit, give
her a few years of gossip and some good chow at the same time [PAM-80].
If you are a woman, you might have trouble getting served (ignored is the

/11am-2:30pm 6pm-midnight daily, closes earlier Sun.
/In a typically unsavory
piece of Market Street is a small storefront offering excellent unusual
food. I've been there four times, and the menu is always different.
There are some staples, such as the black bean soup, and a couple of
categories which persist: grilled food and pastas, with fresh fish and
shellfish offerings in both. They tend to unusual marinades and sauces,
most of which are remarkably delicious. They grill leg of lamb, pork
loin, calamari (delicious), baby chicken rubbed with citrus juices and
fermented black beans (also delicious), skewered scallops, and fresh
fish. I've had pasta with scallops, chilis, garlic, and lime, which was
wonderful. There's pasta with manila clams, more garlic and chilis,
pasta with figs, pine nuts, and garlic, pasta with cepes and
chanterelles. They make the lightest, least oily shoestring potatoes.
In the interests of stability, they now have a more or less constant
menu accompanied by daily specials. The menu includes the soups and
salads, light dishes from carpaccio to some interesting-looking
hamburgers with roasted garlic, and the regular dishes, including the
baby chicken mentioned above and a broiled veal chop with ancho chili
sauce. The desserts are good, but I'm not a dessert man. They have an
espresso machine. The wine list has some interesting offerings at the
usual markups of 50-100α% or more.
The decor is early Georgia O'Keefe; I like it.
Dinner is normally in the $40-50 pp. range [JEO-5/83].

My last visit to Asian Garden was rather dismal. I

/One of the greatest restaurants in S.F. Food and service are impeccable,
measurably superior to Ernie's, its more famous neighbor, at comparable prices.
Food is continental with an Italian slant. Everything is a la carte, so prices do
get high ($20-50 pp. w/wine) but, on both occasions I have been there, I have
left knowing that I had gotten my money's worth. The seafood crepe appetizer,
Caesar salad, veal parmigiana, and chicken Kiev are highly recommended, and
the dessert tray will leave you crazy with indecision. The wine list is extensive,
with a good selection from inexpensive to exorbitant wines from several
countries. Your waiter will gladly help you select a wine if the 10 or so pages of
wine list prove intimidating. The service is first-rate and elegant, but not
haughty or snobbish, as it tends to be in some restaurants in this class. Also

food is characterized by (usually) hot, sometimes sweet sauces that have complex
spicings. Try the Thai Omelette as an appetizer. (All their appetizers are quite
large, and would make a great light meal.) The service is leisurely, but the
ambiance and quality of service make up for it. The decor is lovely, with a

/Very good and reasonably priced. Dishes on the order of $4 each [PB-82].
Wonderful Thai food. Hot, spicy, more complex flavors than
most Szechuan cooking.
The satay is a fine mild appetizer
(originally Indonesian), skewers of beef marinated in coconut milk,
barbecued and served with pickled cucumber slices and peanut sauce. The
squid salad, on the other hand, is anything but mild; the squid is
served in a sauce of lime, chili, garlic, coriander, and other wonders
on a bed of lettuce, which serves to dissipate some of the spiciness.
Delicious. They offer Singha beer, a good Thai brew, some other beers,
and a few jug wines.
Most dishes run $4 to $6 a la carte; rice and salad are a dollar more.
The most expensive dish I spotted on the menu was $6.50 for a hot and
sour soup with lemon grass, shrimp, squid, and crab.
Last century, King Chulalongkorn imported some German brewers to train
the Thai brewers; they learned well, and Singha is a nice lager.
The menu is fairly large but seemed well explained. It should be noted
that most of their salads are actually meals in themselves and not
merely vegetable accompaniments [JEO-4/83].

/This is the 3rd Ethopian restaurant I've seen in the Bay Area. Are we

I had Doro Wat, a spicy chicken stew -- a %2very%* spicy chicken stew. (Their
recipe calls for 1 (small) chicken, an onion and 1 %2tablespoon%* of red pepper.
On the other hand, it did have a wonderful taste.) The chicken was flavorful
and very tender.
Another option for dinner was Sciro, some kind of beans made into a delightfully
spiced mush (not hot).
Everything was served with generic
Ethiopian veggies (potatoes cooked with carrots and parsley) atop Injra -- the
ubiquitous Ethiopian bread-pancake. Finally, they also had Tedge (also spelled
Teg or Tej), a sort of honey-wine.
$3-5 pp. Located in a nice part of town (near the airport on 1st
Street, in an ex-house) [DMR-4/84].
This moderately priced resaurant serves a spicy, distinctive
meal in the East African tradition. The main course is a number of
spicy stews served on a flat soft bread called Injera which is
used to pick up the stew. They also had honey wine which is quite
unusual. This is the place to go if you want to try something different
and like spicy food [JDM-12/84].

/I didn't know that San Jose even %2had%* a Portuguese section. Sousa's is
(apparently) a fairly authentic rendition of what you might eat in
Portugal. (There was certainly enough Portuguese being spoken last
Saturday night.) They have 4 bachalou (sp?) dishes, of which only one
was available that evening. (Bachalou = fried fish and potatoes; the
version I had was made with salt cod.) They also have several other
seafood dishes -- their shrimp was quite good, bathed in a piquant sauce
that I couldn't decipher. The soup was unusual -- one small piece of
sausage floating in a chicken broth, some sort of shredded leek-like
vegetable, and mashed potatoes. Sounds strange, but quite good.

/A great place to stop on the way back from Yosemite or skiing

the inside is not that fancy, but it is very good and cheap. Dishes are
in the range of $2.50 to $3.75 ($4.25 for seafood) and are reasonably sized.
The hot and sour soup was just about the hottest I have every had it.
The Kuo Teh were good. This place appears to be run by part of the same

Closest good Chinese restaurant to Livermore. Real good bean sauce noodles,

/Decent Peking cuisine. Fairly good potstickers, although they aren't
on the menu (ask for pan-fried dumplings) [SMC-82].

Many of the other deli's nearby are open very late, but none

it to be "OK" [GFF-79].

/One of %2the best%1 and out of the way places in LA to get outstanding
french food. Their patte's are the best I've had, and everything else
was outstandling prepared and served. The place is run by Andre and
Lucia Pister, and I belive that Andre is rated as one of top 20
chefs in the US. They also have a shop right next to the restaurant
where you can take home (frozen) everything on the Menu in the form
of catering. If you have a party, have them make you one of their
Stuffed legs of lamb. Highly recomended, its my Maddelena's of LA [GFF-79].
GFF is right. I particularly like their Napoleons for dessert [SMC-80].

/6pm-10:30pm daily except Sun. AX, VS, MC. Reservations advisable.
/Excellent but pricey food in a beach area near a tire store.
I had swordfish that was elegantly presented and was consumed with gusto.
You can bring your own wine, but with a $5 corkage fee it pays to bring
only the really good stuff.
Overall, about $36 pp. [LES-8/85].

/Excellent seafood by all accounts. Excellent abalone,
in a more flavorful breading than usual. Good seafood
Newburgh. Shrimp cocktail good, though the sauce was
a little heavy. Excellent "white" clam chowder for
California (I'm from New England!) -- it actually had
potatoes in it, instead of creamed celery [GLS-78].

/Very much a hole in the wall place, but the food is merely outstanding
and very cost effective. Most dishes are hot and spicy, I recommend the
Mint Leaf Chicken and the Won Ton Soup (their claim to fame). The ice
tea drips with tons of sugar, so beware if you're not a sugar freak [GFF-79].
Reasonable Thai food. Avoid the ice tea; it reminds me of
Kapok's Lignan beef [SMC-80].

.TIT Cafes
⊗The Peasant Kitchen & Wine Cellar
/1412 Camino del Mar, Del Mar
/714 481-7135
/
/A very pleasant small sidewalk cafe in Del Mar. An aspiring
manager named Howie was running the place at the time, and he was doing a
spectacular job. The wine cellar downstairs is better stocked than any
but the largest bay area liquor stores, and the prices are the same as in
liquor stores. The menu is different for each day of the week (or perhaps
they use some other scheme; there are about half a dozen color coded
menus, only one color of which is in use on a given day); the choices are
few at any given sitting, but the prices are moderate to low and the food
is always superbly prepared. Each menu emphasizes a different European
peasant cuisine.
There seemed to be no pressure to hurry us out (maybe chatting with the
manager had something to do with this), and the evening rolling into the
outdoor seating area is especially pleasant in late summer. The
aspirations of the place seem to be to continue to be exactly as it is,
which gives me hope for my next visit [PAM-80].
